Much of Marion County sits on deep sand. Upland soils like Candler sand drain fast, which is good for pavers, but loose sand settles under weight. So we dig out the area, pull roots and debris, and compact the sand underneath. The Florida Geological Survey lists poorly compacted soil after digging as one cause of settling that looks like a sinkhole.
Next comes the base. Crushed stone goes down in layers of 4 to 6 inches, and a plate compactor packs each one. Industry guides call for at least 4 inches of compacted base under a patio or walkway on well-drained ground. A driveway needs at least 6 inches, and wet or weak ground needs more.
Edge restraints of concrete, aluminum, steel or plastic hold the pavers together. Then about an inch of bedding sand is leveled with a screed. It has to be washed concrete sand, since limestone screenings and stone dust often do not compact evenly. The pavers are compacted into the sand, and joint sand is swept and vibrated in until the joints are full.
Ocala averages about 110 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. Pavers are made in a plant and arrive ready to lay, so nothing cures on site in that heat. You can use a new paver driveway once the joints are full and the extra sand is swept off. A poured driveway typically waits about a week before cars park on it.
The joints matter too. The paver industry's application guide says the joints between pavers help reduce the cracking common in poured concrete and asphalt. If a spot settles later or a pipe underneath needs work, the pavers there can be lifted. The base gets fixed, and the same pavers go back down, so the repair blends in.
Rain is the other test. Ocala gets about 52 inches of rain a year, and more than half falls from June through September. The sand in the joints lets each paver pass the load to the pavers around it. Where storms wash that sand out, a joint sand stabilizer helps hold it.
A driveway that is cracked and sinking is telling you the ground under it moved. Laying pavers over a slab that is still moving would pass the problem to the new surface. So the old slab comes out through our concrete removal work. Then the ground is regraded and compacted for the new base.
A sound old slab can sometimes stay as the base. Pavers can go over existing concrete on a sand bed, with drain holes at the low spots. Cracks 3/8 inch or wider get patched first. We check your old slab during the free estimate and tell you which way makes sense.
We pour concrete and lay pavers, so we can price both on the same visit. A poured concrete driveway is one broom-finished slab with control joints. Pavers come in more colors and patterns and can be relaid in sections. The same choice comes up out back, where we also pour concrete patios and pool decks.
