A 2023 study counted about 75,000 horses and ponies in Marion County, more than any other U.S. county. Board fences are popular on horse farms because horses see them well, extension guidance notes. Paint protects the wood, and a horse sees a painted board fence as a solid barrier.
We build three- and four-board fence. Fence boards are usually oak or treated pine. A 1x6 board costs less than a 2x6 but warps more and is not as strong. The same guidance keeps the bottom of the fence 6 to 8 inches off the ground.
Farm and ranch fencing can also be wire on wood posts. For horses, extension guidance rates mesh wire with openings too small for a hoof among the safest fences. An electric wire added to a board or mesh fence keeps horses from rubbing on it or chewing the wood.
Much of the ground around Ocala is deep sand, so posts go in deep and the soil gets packed hard. Extension guidance sets wooden line posts at least 2 feet deep, and deeper in sand or wet soil. The soil goes back a few inches at a time, and packing the bottom 6 inches matters most.
Board fence posts usually sit 8 to 10 feet apart. Each section of a board fence must be equally strong, so every line post is the same size. Corner and gate posts go bigger, at least 8 inches across the top.
Posts need wood treated for ground contact. Florida's building code rates the state's termite risk as very heavy. Lumber treated only for above-ground use will not protect against termites or soil contact, extension guidance warns.
An entry gate between stone or block columns turns a driveway into a property entrance. Each column sits on a concrete footing, and the hinge column carries the gate's weight on every swing. The drive through it can be a limerock driveway or a concrete driveway.
Planning an automatic opener? Mention it at the estimate, so the hinge column and power to the gate are planned for it. Openers built to the UL 325 safety standard use sensors, such as photo eyes, that guard against trapping a person.
Marion County's code exempts fences from its setback rules, so a fence can usually run along the property line. Anything built in a county road right-of-way needs a right-of-way utilization permit. Setting the gate back from the road lets a truck and trailer pull off the pavement while it opens.
